Learning Better Together: The NorthBay Experience

Posted by Isa Walker

From exploring the rustic shores of the upper Chesapeake Bay and applying scientific theory in practical situations to embracing newfound responsibility and friendships, students immersed themselves in the full NorthBay experience. Amazing, naturalistic, and collaborative are just three words sixth-grade students Nathan, Alayna, and Ariyeh used to describe their NorthBay journey.

During the two-day overnight camping getaway, students participated in a duo of science and adventure through a multitude of activities. They learned about ecosystems and human impact on the environment, as well as tested their capabilities on a high-ropes course.

Reflecting on the experience, Alayna shared, “I am a visual and hands-on learner. I can understand when someone explains something, but I need to physically experience it for all of my senses to combine and to fully understand a concept.” Similarly, Nathan also enjoyed hands-on learning and shared that he has always enjoyed caring for nature. After encountering living creatures and realizing they have their own thoughts and feelings, he began to deepen a valuable trait – compassion.

Both students engaged not only in practical situations that sparked curiosity and understanding but also empathy and compassion, traits we strive to cultivate at Two Rivers.

Teachers Witness Learning in Action

Throughout each lesson and obstacle course, students engaged in inspiring ways — helping one another think critically and adapt. Science teacher, Ms.Camilla shared,“It was wonderful seeing our sixth-grade students helping each other think outside the box during their science classes and encouraging one another during each obstacle course. Friendships were made and announced throughout the experience.”

The NorthBay experience was a reminder that learning goes beyond classroom experiments — it happens best when stepping outside of one’s familiar environment and learning better together.

Beyond the District

Ms. Camilla said it best: “Living in an urban area like Washington, DC, often limits students’ daily exposure to an abundance of nature. I want students to know that there is a real connection between science and the city they live in.”

Sixth-graders returned to school with a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature’s ambience, adding to their development as lifelong learners. Most importantly, NorthBay captured the essence of Crew – the memories, laughs, and discoveries our students share with one another. It is an experience they will not share with anyone else, carrying a piece of each other forever.
