Originally from Queens, New York, by way of Buffalo, Alan recently completed his fifteenth year in education as a High School Humanities Teacher and Curriculum Lead at Indian Creek School in Crownsville, Maryland. He has worked at public and private schools in Philadelphia, Nashville, Boston, Baltimore, Columbia, and Washington, D.C. He holds a B.S. in Communications from Tennessee State University and an M.S. in Entertainment Business from Full Sail University, and is currently a third-year doctoral candidate in English Literature at Morgan State University, where he also teaches in the Department of English. His doctoral research explores American cinematic portrayals of African American women, examining the tensions between representation, social identity, and the blurring of fact and fiction in popular culture. Alan is also a filmmaker and multi-instrumentalist trained in clarinet, cello, sousaphone, trombone, viola, violin, and double bass, and performs as a background vocalist alongside various R&B and Gospel artists. Creativity anchors his practice, guided by rigor, restorative justice, and belief in every student’s potential.
