Problem-Based Learning

Across the curriculum, our students actively solve problems to deepen their understanding, develop critical thinking and creativity, and learn to collaborate with others.

In math, students learn to solve a variety of problems that deepen their conceptual understanding, strengthen their number sense, and sharpen their ability to make mathematical arguments. In literacy, students learn to closely read a variety of texts and sources in order to answer a larger guiding question.

In expeditions, student learning is driven by a rich, compelling problem that makes them want to find answers to a hard-to-solve situation. In order to solve the problem at the heart of an expeditions, students engage with case studies, field work, experts, service learning, literacy integration opportunities, and connections with the arts. They also share their learning with a culminating presentation at the Community Showcase!
